Ruby Sales
Jonathan Myrick Daniels, a (white) Episcopal seminarian, was gunned down in Alabama in 1965 while shielding a 16 year old Sales with his own body. The white supremacist gunman was found innocent by an all-white jury and publicly stated he would do it all again if given the chance.

Sales went on to become a major civil rights leader, activist, theologian, and (in recent years) elder spokesperson for the Black Lives Matter movement.
